If you are a fan of 3D printing and music, you must remember the name Olaf Diegel. Yes, the Swedish Lund University professor used 3D printing technology to create many instruments including guitar, drums and saxophone in 2014, and then used them to hold the first 3D printed concert in human history. Famous overnight.
Now, to further explore the possibilities of 3D printing in the music field, this energetic artist has created a new 3D printed instrument. This time it is still a guitar, but it is all aluminum and the first in the world.
Printing process
This exquisitely designed all-aluminum 3D printing has a very apt name - heavy metal, which was commissioned by Professor Diegel to commission the Dutch 3D printing service provider Xilloc. The equipment used is the M400 powder bed metal 3D printer of the famous 3D printer manufacturer EOS, and the layer thickness setting is 0.1mm.
After printing, in order to avoid hurting the guitar's petal decoration, Professor Diegel spent 4 days manually removing the support. As for the final result, you can clearly see from the figure below that the surface roughness is comparable to that of a sand casting.
Therefore, in order to make the surface of the guitar smoother and more comfortable to pick up, Professor Diegel has polished it and so on. It also took him four days. And then installing electronic components and stringed instruments took him a lot of time. But in the end, all of this effort has paid off – the guitar not only shows the unique metal beauty, but also plays normally.
Professor Diegel is very satisfied with this result. He also said that he plans to print some other instruments in the future, but now his main task is to enjoy the joy of the world's unique heavy metal instruments.
