Dow Chemicals Mass Produces New Product SPS in Germany

Dow Chemical recently completed the construction of two polystyrene syndiontactic polystyrene (SPS) production lines in eastern Germany, with a total production capacity of 36,000 tons/year, which will soon be put into industrial production. SPS products will also be invested in the Eurasian (including Japan) market. Since 2000, Dow Chemical Co., Ltd. and Japan Idemitsu Petroleum Corp. will jointly develop special applications for metallocene SPS products.
SPS is a new type of thermoplastic engineering plastic that was successfully developed by the Japan Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., and uses styrene-ethyl monomer as a starting material, and uses a metallocene catalyst in production. It has many functions, such as electrical insulation, heat resistance and chemical resistance.
Shuguang Petrochemical Company has installed an installation with an annual output of 5,000 tons of SPS in its factory in Chiba, and at the same time, it conducts trial sales and develops new special applications in the world market. This is under the joint development and cooperation of Dow Chemical Company.
The scope of application of SPS products has long been rapidly expanding, mainly used in the automotive sector of electrical equipment. The company intends to continue its research and aims to build an industrial SPS factory in Japan in recent years.
